Nicolas Jaar “I’ve Got A Woman”
from pitchfork.com:
Nicolas Jaar is a New York-based 21-year-old who does a lot of things that young dance producers do— plays shows in clubs around the world, remixes dance artists, runs a small record label called Clown and Sunset — but he doesn’t really make dance music.
Born to artistic parents, Jaar listened to everything from minimal techno producer Ricardo Villalobos to hip-hop mastermind Madlib to Portuguese fado music, Ethiopian jazz, and Pink Floyd while growing up in Chile and NYC. And on debut full-length Space Is Only Noise, coming February 14 on Circus Company, he works a lush, meditative style that depends more on silence than on beats— check out highlight “I Got a Woman” above for proof. Pianos, guitars, and voices blur into electronics, all of it melting into a soft, drifting haze somewhere between Air and Portishead. It’s a deeply relaxing, satisfying piece of work from someone seemingly way too young to be making music this mature.
We recently spoke with Jaar, currently a comparative literature student at Brown University, while he was gearing up for a show in Berlin.
